Jewish elites celebrate a failing New York JCRC; JLP joins S.A.F.E. CUNY to protest
On Monday, June 12, the New York Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) held its annual gala, and honored Bill Thompson, chair of the board of the City University of New York, at whose law school graduation speaker Fatima Mousa Mohammed delivered a viciously anti-Jewish commencement speech one month before.
Thompson, while he belatedly denounced Mohammed’s speech, has not yet fired CUNY Law School’s dean, Sudha Setty, who signed off on at least part of the speech, proudly introduced Mohammed on the stage, and even clapped once Mohammed finished calling upon students to fight against “Zionism,” meaning Jews, “around the world.”
“This is an outrageous insult and obsequious act against the Jewish community. No one in the CUNY administration should be honored by [the] JCRC,” 15-year CUNY trustee Jeffrey Wiesenfeld told the New York Post. “Billy Thompson and the chancellor didn’t fire the law school dean who applauded that jihadist speech to destroy the Jews in Israel. Let’s call it what it was.”
Thompson’s award ceremony went ahead as planned, but the Jewish Leadership Project’s activists and our ad truck were there to protest and support Jeffrey Lax, a professor at CUNY Law School of 20 years and president of S.A.F.E. CUNY.
JCRC officials demanded that the New York police department remove our truck, but the driver refused, noting that the truck was legally parked in front of the New York Historical Society Museum.
