Jewish activists demand New York leadership insist CUNY Law dean be fired

Students and Faculty for Equality (S.A.F.E.) CUNY and the Jewish Leadership Project are calling on the head of the New York Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) to hold CUNY accountable for promoting genocidal Jew-hatred. Specifically that Gideon Taylor, JCRC CEO, demand that CUNY Law School dean Sudha Setty be fired.

On May 12, CUNY Law School commencement speaker Fatima Mousa Mohammed called for the destruction of the Jewish state and urged students to “fight against… Zionism around the world.” Press reports note that Setty applauded the speech. Jeffrey Lax, co-founder of S.A.F.E. CUNY, said, “Jewish leaders in New York need to demand that the Board of Governors of the City University of New York remove Law School Dean Sudha Setty and cooperate with the NY City Council’s probe of anti-Semitism at CUNY.”

Charles Jacobs of the Jewish Leadership Project noted that, “The call for genocide was applauded by faculty, students, and administrators, and was reminiscent of Nazi rallies in the 1930s. Gideon Taylor must demand that Dean Setty be removed and that university officials cooperate with the federal Department of Education’s investigation of anti-Semitism at CUNY Law School. CUNY must demonstrate decisively and unambiguously that it is serious about eliminating anti-Semitism at CUNY.”

S.A.F.E. CUNY and the JLP also are calling for all Jewish leaders, especially the ADL, AJC, and the Jewish Federation of North America, to petition the Biden administration and Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt to demonstrate that its newly-released plan to fight anti-Semitism is more than nice words.

“We are calling on all people of good conscience to stand up against anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry,” Lax said. “We must not allow hatred to go unchallenged.”
