Guantanamo Bay State
In 2010, the Newton, MA town government voted to extend a welcome to a terrorist imprisoned at Guantanamo and due for imminent release. The high recidivism rate of Guantanamo prisoners that have been released is well known. One of the ringleaders of the attack on America’s Benghazi embassy was a released Guantanamo prisoners. The prisoner who was welcomed to Newton was a member of Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group that carried out the Mumbai massacre during which a Jewish Chabad couple was targeted, sexually assaulted, tortured, and murdered. Despite this, the Newton town council resolved that the terrorist would be welcomed to live in Newton – a heavily Jewish neighborhood. With successful mobilization and organization of neighborhood activists, APT was able to force the council to rescind the resolution.
